“PATRICK COUNTY: THEN AND NOW” AT THE REYNOLDS HOMESTEAD
The Reynolds Homestead will host Marvin Keene and Steve Casagrande for a presentation on “Patrick County: Then and Now” on Wednesday, August 6 at noon in the Continuing Education Center. Keene, a lifetime resident of Patrick County, and Casagrande, president of the Homestead Postcard Club, have assembled dozens of old photographs and postcards that feature memorable sites throughout Patrick County’s history. These will be paired with photos of the sites currently, to provide an interesting “before and after” look at how the county has changed over the years. Some of the photographs include the old school in Woolwine, local businesses in Patrick Springs and downtown scenes in Stuart. This fascinating ‘time machine’ approach to local history chronicles the evolution of Patrick County through several generations. The public is invited to bring a bag lunch and enjoy the program which is offered free, thanks to the sponsorship of the Patrick County Historical Society.

LOCAL STUDENTS ATTEND CHALLENGE CAMP
In partnership with Patrick County Public Schools and the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, the Reynolds Homestead sponsored the third annual Challenge Camp for rising 4th to 8th grade gifted and talented students. Transportation was the theme for the camp focusing on the science, technology, engineering, art, and math that can be discovered when studying transportation. The camp began on Monday, June 23, with a visit to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute in Blacksburg. Students learned about the Smart Road used to test vehicles and drivers under different road conditions. Following a visit to the control tower, the students were allowed to ride their school bus on the Smart Road and take a tour inside the Smart Bridge located on the road.
